  OVERVIEW

Not as famous as the neighboring beaches of Waimea Bay and Ehukai, this beach is popular with area locals during the summer when the conditions are calm and serene. The beach rarely attracts many tourists who prefer the more well-known beaches in the area, so Kewaena is a wonderful out-of-the-way spot locals enjoy. During the summer, enjoy swimming or snorkeling, but caution is suggested for divers due to submerged rocks. During the winter, the conditions can be extremely hazardous—even for experienced surfers—during small heights and when the third reef surf heights start exceeding thirty feet.

Overlooks the famous surf site "Off- the-Wall", also known as "Kodak Reef", to the North and to the South, the equally dangerous "Log Cabins" surf site.

  DIRECTIONS

Follow the H1 westward to the H2 in Pearl City. Travel north on the H2 to Wahiawa. In Wahiawa follow Highway 80, which becomes Highway 99 and the Kamehameha Highway. Before reaching Haleiwa the Kamehameha Highway makes a sharp northward turn. Continue to follow this highway along the northern shore of the island. Kewaena Beach lies between Ehukai Beach Park and Waimea Bay Beach Park.

  PLEASE NOTE

While Hawaii's beaches can bring much enjoyment, it is always a good practice to use common sense while visiting them. Please be aware of the wave & wind conditions before going into the water. Mornings are usually best for swimming, snorkeling or diving. Have respect for the strength of the waves and be aware that high surf can come up at any time. NEVER turn your back to the ocean.

Be careful when exploring any rocky shorelines. Waves can crash on the rocks and knock you over easily, and the rocks may also be sharp when walking on them.

When snorkeling or scuba diving, please have respect for ocean life, and remember that the coral reef is alive too. Avoid standing on or touching if at all possible.
