OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Ala Moana
Beach Park is located in between Waikiki and
Honolulu. It is a favorite beach among the
local residents of the south shore of Oahu. Ala Moana
Beach Park
is a great place for many beach related
activities, such as swimming,
picnicking, strolling on
the beach, surfing, tennis, sunbathing,
fishing, and relaxing. It is also much less
crowded than Waikiki Beach.
This beach is protected by a outer barrier
reef and it is over a half mile long. So
there is plenty of room to find your own
little spot. And it is protected by large
surf so it is a great spot for serious
swimmers, beginner swimmers and families
with kids.
Ala Moana Beach Park didn't always exist. It
was originally a wetland that the locals
used as a dump for garbage back in the
1920's. A boat channel was dredged through
the coral reef to connect the Ala Wai Boat
Harbor and Kewalo Basin.
The beach is man made. A dredging company
dredged out an area just off shore that
people now swim in that boats don't cruise
through anymore. In the 50's the same
company started dumping sand at the park,
creating the beach now seen today.
Compared to the west end of the beach, the
east end of the beach closest to Diamond
Head is reef and coral free if your worried
about that. Be aware though that the bottom
drops off quickly to deeper water that you
cannot stand in.
This expansive over 100 acre park has many
amenities such as large grassy areas, banyan
and palm trees, restrooms, showers,
concession stands, a music pavilion, tennis
courts and a lot of picnic tables.
There are also some of the south shores best
surfing spots located in front of the park.
Honolulu County Lifeguards are available
everyday in case of emergency. |

PLEASE NOTE |
|
| |
|
|
| |
While
Hawaii's beaches can bring much enjoyment,
it is always a good practice to use common
sense while visiting them. Please be aware
of the wave & wind conditions before going
into the water. Mornings are usually best
for swimming, snorkeling or diving. Have
respect for the strength of the waves and be
aware that high surf can come up at any
time. NEVER turn your back to the ocean.
Be careful when exploring any rocky
shorelines. Waves can crash on the rocks and
knock you over easily, and the rocks may
also be sharp when walking on them.
When snorkeling or scuba diving, please have
respect for ocean life, and remember that
the coral reef is alive too. Avoid standing
on or touching if at all possible. |
