OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The monument was
erected by the Japanese government to
remember the victims of the Ehime Maru. On
Feb. 9, 2001, The US nuclear submarine
Greeneville struck the Japanese fishing
boat, Ehime Maru, near Oahu with 35 people
on board including 13 students. The boat
sank in 5 minutes and nine people were
missing. The monument features nine black
granite blocks which support the one-ton
anchor retrieved from the sunken Ehime Maru,
with nine links of its chain still attached.
Carved in stone is the inscription: "This
honors the nine precious lives lost and
serves as a place where their souls are
remembered." |
