OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The Pacific Aviation Museum
is a significant addition to the enormously
popular complex of historic military
attractions at Pearl Harbor. Here visitors
can see vintage warplanes and displays in a
museum dedicated to air combat and its vital
role in the Pacific during WW II.
The museum is located on Ford Island, a
National Historic Landmark at the center of
the Pearl Harbor Historic Site complex. It
is the site of the nation's only aviation
battlefield and continues to look much like
it did on Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese
launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.
The hangars that house the museum bear the
bullet holes, strafe marks and bomb craters
from that day.
Located several hundred yards from the USS
Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri
Memorial, the 42,000-square-foot museum
contains a collection of fighter planes that
saw combat in the war. The latest aircraft
is a supersonic F-14 Tomcat, which was the
Navy's primary maritime air superiority
fighter, fleet defense interceptor and
tactical reconnaissance platform from 1974
to 2006.
The arrival of the F-14 Tomcat signals the
beginning of Pacific Aviation Museum's Phase
II plans, which include restoration of two
additional historic hangars and the landmark
red and white icon Control Tower.
Restoration of these will house the
increasing aircraft collection, which will
soon include an Air Force F-15 Screaming
Eagle along with the Tomcat.
The facility encompasses 16 acres, including
three renovated hangars, a landmark control
tower, and aircraft from World War II, the
Vietnam War and the Korean War.
In addition to vintage planes, the museum
offers hands-on technology experiences
including combat flight simulators,
commentary by veteran docents, and films
recounting the Pearl Harbor attack. There is
a restaurant and gift shop.
The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
daily. It's accessed by shuttles from the
USS Bowfin Submarine Park at Pearl Harbor.
There is an admission fee. |
