Senator Fong's
Plantation and Gardens is a 700
acre, family owned, tropical garden located
beneath the majestic Ko'olau mountain range
in Kahaluu, Oahu.
An easy paced 1 mile (1.5 hour) Guided
Walking Tour takes you through the Garden's
lush valley and plateaus of tropical flower
gardens, fruit and nut orchards, exotic palm
varieties, and Hawaiian plants.
Fun for the whole family, personable guides
give out fragrant flowers picked along the
trail, kukui nuts found beneath the trees,
or offer a taste of fruits or nuts right
from the orchards, whatever is in season.
Within the Gardens there is a beautiful open
air
Visitor
Center
that provides a scenic area for weddings,
receptions, and baby's first luau
celebrations. The art of lei-making is also
taught here on a daily basis.
Hiram L. Fong was the first
Asian American elected to the U.S. Senate.
He started off as the seventh of eleven
children born to parents who were both
immigrants from
China. His
father came to
Hawaii
to work in the sugarcane fields as an
indentured plantation worker. In 1950 Hiram
Fong was able to purchase a 700 acre
plantation that is now Senator Fong's
Plantation
and Gardens. Hiram Fong passed away in 2004,
at the age of 97. He had always contributed
his good health and well being to this
Plantation
Garden, his personal oasis,
in
Oahu, Hawaii. |
